When it comes to the art of tailoring uniforms, there are few projects more demanding than designing and manufacturing dress uniforms for a military band. To understand the level of expertise involved, you must consider the unique needs of musicians playing different instruments; seated, standing or when marching.
This was the challenge handed to Tailored Image by the Irish Defence Forces School of Music, with a brief to design a high quality and functional military dress uniform for the band that would showcase the Irish Defence Forces in its best light. The military band has an impressive engagement schedule and they are in the spotlight on all of these occasions. A spotless appearance is an essential part of military discipline and this also applies also to the military band.
The uniform created for the band consists of a complete suite of garments, including a range of headwear for the 100 plus bandsmen and women. The quality of the fabric, braiding and gilt work is exceptional and creates a very real sense of occasion every time the bands come together for a performance, travelling from their bases in Dublin, Cork and Athlone.
Formed in 1923, the military bands have performed at every major Irish ceremonial occasion, including all Presidential Inaugurations since then to the present day.
The band’s engagement schedule also includes attendance at Áras an Uachtaráin (Presidential Residence) for Presentation of Credentials ceremonies of newly appointed Ambassadors, the provision of musical support for State visits to Ireland by foreign Heads of State and high-profile State Engagements and military parades.
The splendour of the uniforms can be seen around Europe and America when on occasion the bands perform in festivals and military tattoos.
